Thomas Charles Glaessner, PhD, has always understood the importance of a good education, leading to his ultimate professional success in finance, economics, and macro investing. Inspired by his father, Philip Jacob Glaessner, who worked at the New York Federal Reserve, he earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from Kenyon College, where he graduated summa cum laude, and a Doctor of Philosophy in finance and economics from the University of Virginia in 1982.
Dr. Glaessner launched his career at the Federal Reserve in 1982 working in three different areas in the International Finance Division with the last being responsible for the Brazil desk during the emerging market debt crisis when Paul Volcker headed the Federal Reserve. Mr. Glaessner left the Federal Reserve to join the World Bank’s Financial and Treasury Department in 1985 and also took up positions in the Latin America and Asian Regions of the World Bank until 1997. Then in 1997 he joined Soros Fund Management LLC as a senior strategist in the Quantum Emerging Growth Fund between 1997 to 2000. After this Mr. Glaessner returned to the World Bank as Principal Financial Economist specializing in capital market development between 2000-2004. Mr. Glaessner then spent the rest of the decade at Citigroup, as the Managing Director and Global head of EM Trading Strategy. During this period, he transitioned into trading with a role on the Citi proprietary short term interest rate trading desk during the great Financial Crisis between 2008-2011. From 2011 to 2023, he found success as a partner and senior strategist at Gávea Investimentos, which he eventually left to start his own company, TGLLC Research. As the chief executive officer, he consults with clients across the United States, Asia, and Latin America.
Known for his humility, Dr. Glaessner has maintained strong connections with his colleagues over the years, including contacts with central banks around the world, and many market participants having acted as a mentor to many in today’s financial markets. He considers his most notable achievement to be his involvement in assisting countries through at least six to seven financial crises over the past four decades, including Thailand, Brazil, and Mexico. He has also published several papers addressing the financial issues faced by banks, written extensively on electronic finance, served as an adviser to technology firms focused on central bank digital currencies, and authored a book on electronic security. He’s a member of the American Economic Association.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Glaessner strives to engage in board work and give back to the community. He’s interested in lecturing executive MBA students to share his knowledge and assist them in various ways. He feels he still has valuable insights to offer. As he ages, his perspective evolves, and he finds that people still seek his advice.
On a more personal note, Dr. Glaessner lost his wife in 2019; ever since, he’s made special contributions to the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in her memory. He has two children and two grandchildren.
